Military Champion Motor Grader Ready For Deployment 09/02/2008

The first Class III compact Champion motor grader designed for rapid deployment with Americas airborne forces edged closer to the front line military equipment fleets with its recent deployment to the Defense Logistics Agency. The C86 AACG Air Assault Compact Grader is one of six Champion compact graders that has been offered to the Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia. Champion Motor Graders negotiated terms for expedited delivery and discounted pricing for all federal agencies. The C86 AACG project has been developed over several years after Champion graders came to the attention of military attendees at the ConExpo equipment exhibition. The US military Defense Supply needed a motor grader that could be transported in a single helicopter sortie. Until the latest development graders that were used by airborne engineers have been sectionalized into two large components that are transported separately, then re-assembled after deliver. The Champion C86 Compact Grader will be the first motor grader that the can be air-lifted. The Grader has a 100hp all-wheel drive that fits the weight limit and dimensional envelope for the single-lift profile.

The C86 Grader was developed with several modifications to become the prototype Air Assault Compact Grader. The modifications included a low profile cab or ROPS canopy which allows drive on/drive-off loading for a C-130 transport. The Champion motor grader also comes with tie-downs to secure the machine inside a C-130 or to sling under a Chinook helicopter. The grader also comes equipped with handholds and a special grip coating on the body surface to enable Army riggers to climb on top of the grader and hook it up to the helicopter sling. The grader was put through its own test boot camp at Ft. Campbell base with the troops of the 101st and a team from Champion. A sectionalized machine normally requires a good eight hour day to re-assemble and start it up, whereas the single-lift machine hits the ground running. This also means there is no possibility of the two grader sections being dropped off in two different places.
