Rising Cost Of Tractors And Farm Supplies Threatening Alabama Farmers 02/03/2008

Some farmers in Alabama are finding it increasingly difficult to find money to start planting while the cost of farm equipment, tractors, fertilizers, and seeds are soaring. The rising profits felt in the farm economy also mean rising costs and prices for fueling tractors and planting equipment. Alabama is also still recovering from the late season freeze last Easter which reduced wheat and corn in some parts of the state. Robert Goodman an Auburn University farm economist said the price of fertilizer has doubled. This combined with the cost of seeds and soybean seeds which has doubled and in short supply is not boding too well for some farmers.

Fuel for tractors and combine harvesters has also become a very high cost factor, as Goodman said, “Everybody knows what the price of fuel has done.”
Adding to farmers expenses are fertilizer costs. Alabama farmer Buster Thornton said he paid $1 per gallon on tractor fuel than he did last year. Thornton was also stunned to learn that herbicide prices had gone from $28 a gallon last year to $56 a gallon this year.
